On the morning of April 12 local time, U.S. Vice President Vance held a press conference at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Vance stated that the negotiations between the United States and Iran held in Islamabad, Pakistan, failed to reach an agreement, with significant differences remaining between the two sides. The U.S. delegation will return to the United States.
No agreement was reached after 21 hours of negotiations between the two parties.
Vance stated that after approximately 21 hours of negotiations, no agreement had been reached between the United States and Iran. Both sides engaged in multiple rounds of 'substantive discussions,' but ultimately failed to achieve results. He pointed out that the U.S. side had clearly outlined its 'red lines' as well as acceptable and unacceptable terms, while the Iranian side 'chose not to accept these terms.'
The U.S. delegation will return without reaching an agreement.
Vance said, 'We have now conducted 21 hours (of negotiations) and had several substantive discussions with the Iranians. That is the good news. The bad news is that we have yet to reach an agreement. I think this is worse news for Iran than it is for the United States. We will return to the United States without reaching an agreement.'
Vance also expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s mediation efforts, acknowledging their positive role in helping bridge the gap between the two sides, and emphasized that the failure of the negotiations 'has a greater impact on Iran.'
The U.S. cited the nuclear issue as one of the key points of contention.
Vance stated that the failure to reach an agreement in the U.S.-Iran negotiations stemmed primarily from Iran’s lack of a clear commitment to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Vance noted that the U.S. demanded that Iran not only refrain from developing nuclear weapons currently but also commit long-term to not acquiring related capabilities and technologies, but 'we have not seen such a clear willingness.' He emphasized that this objective is a core demand of President Trump during the negotiations.
Regarding the details of the negotiations, Vance stated that the specific content would not be disclosed publicly, but reiterated that the nuclear issue was one of the key points of contention.
Vance also revealed that during the approximately 21-hour negotiation process, the U.S. side maintained 'continuous communication' with President Trump and the national security team and had presented Iran with a final proposal, awaiting their response.
The Iranian authorities have not yet responded to the aforementioned statements from the US side.
