IDC data shows that NVIDIA generated $2.1 billion in Ethernet switch revenue that quarter, a year-over-year increase of 192.7%, capturing a market share of 21.5%. IDC noted, "The most significant development in Q1 2026 was NVIDIA’s rise to the top of the data center Ethernet switch market."

Spectrum-X: NVIDIA’s 'Networking Weapon'
NVIDIA’s success this time stems from its Spectrum-X platform.
Spectrum-X is not a single product but an end-to-end networking solution encompassing BlueField DPUs (Data Processing Units) and NVIDIA LinkX cables, specifically designed for large-scale GPU clusters.
In simple terms, the logic behind this system is that AI training requires thousands of GPUs to work together, and the communication speed between GPUs directly determines training efficiency. Spectrum-X was built precisely for this 'internal GPU highway.'
IDC stated that Spectrum-X “captures demand from hyperscale cloud providers and enterprise customers for AI factory network infrastructure through co-design of GPUs and networking.” In other words, customers who purchase NVIDIA GPUs are also increasingly adopting NVIDIA networking solutions—an ecosystem lock-in effect is emerging.
Rapid Market Expansion Overall
NVIDIA's rise has occurred within a rapidly expanding market.
According to IDC, global datacenter Ethernet switch market revenue reached $15.4 billion in Q1 2026, an increase of 39.8% year-over-year. Of this, hyperscale cloud providers and enterprise datacenters together contributed $10 billion, up 61% year-over-year.
By region, the Americas posted the fastest growth, rising 49.7% year-over-year; Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) grew by 32.2%; and the Asia-Pacific region (APAC) increased by 25.9%.
Demand for high-speed switches was particularly strong. In Q1 2026, 800G switches accounted for 35.8% of datacenter revenue share, while 200G and 400G switches combined accounted for 34.1%, together contributing approximately 70% of global datacenter Ethernet revenue.
From GPU to Networking: NVIDIA’s Full-Stack Ambition
This is not NVIDIA’s first foray beyond GPUs. Previously, NVIDIA announced its Vera CPU initiative and plans to expand optical interconnect manufacturing capacity in the U.S. tenfold through a partnership with Corning.
