On the news front, U.S. startup Science Corp. recently received approval to market in the European Union a retinal chip designed to help patients with geographic atrophy (GA) regain partial vision. This marks the first time a U.S.-based brain-computer interface (BCI) company has launched a related device on a large scale for patient use, representing a significant milestone in the commercialization of BCI technology. The PRIMA system is classified as a semi-invasive BCI; its technical approach involves a subretinal photovoltaic implant paired with specialized glasses. These glasses project near-infrared light onto the implant, which converts it into electrical stimulation signals that directly activate residual retinal neurons to restore functional central vision.
According to Zheshang Securities, semi-invasive BCI products are expected to receive regulatory approvals successively in the current phase and undergo market validation. The firm believes the BCI market may already reach a meaningful scale in the medium term, with even greater long-term potential. Taking into account the deployment of both hardware and software, the global BCI market is projected to grow from USD 2.41 billion in 2025 to USD 12.11 billion by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.8% over the forecast period (through 2035), indicating substantial long-term growth prospects.
