Within this closed loop, part of NVIDIA’s revenue growth stems not from end-user demand but from credit it injects itself. This is not a problem unique to NVIDIA. The entire AI infrastructure financing model rests on one assumption—that the cost of capital approaches zero and that markets will always be willing to pay for the 'future.' Chain Reaction

Credit market skepticism does not require verifying each company individually—it propagates automatically down the financing chain.

The Bill from 2000

This script isn’t new.

In March 2000,$Cisco (CSCO.US)$it became the world’s largest company by market capitalization at $555 billion. Its growth engine was called "vendor financing"—lending money to unprofitable internet companies to purchase Cisco equipment. At its peak, it had an exposure of approximately $4 billion across more than 700 clients. Chambers described it as a "once-in-a-century revolution."

After the Nasdaq peaked, clients began collapsing en masse. In May 2001, Cisco wrote off $2.2 billion in inventory and recorded $800 million in bad debt provisions. Its stock price plummeted from $79 to $9.50. Cisco’s share price finally surpassed its 2000 high in December 2025—25 years later. However, due to continuous share buybacks that reduced its outstanding shares, its current market capitalization remains more than 40% below its 2000 peak—its stock price recovered, but the company’s scale did not.

Between 1996 and 2000, vendor financing was framed as 'ecosystem enablement' and a 'demand catalyst.' After the 2000 Nasdaq crash, as clients collapsed en masse, Cisco’s bad debts surfaced—and the same numbers were suddenly reinterpreted as: 'When exactly are you going to repay us?'

The shift in logic is abrupt: before the break, equity markets provided narrative legitimacy for vendor financing; after the break, the narrative vanished, leaving only the numbers on the bill. Cisco has an exposure of USD 40 billion. NVIDIA alone has potential arrangements related to OpenAI exceeding USD 600 billion. The Rewarded 'No'

Apple reclaiming the title of the world’s most valuable company today is no coincidence.

Apple’s latest quarterly capital expenditure was only USD 1.97 billion, down 36% year-over-year. In the same period, Amazon set its full-year capex guidance at USD 200 billion, while Alphabet raised its guidance to USD 205 billion. Apple opted instead to return cash to shareholders—announcing an additional USD 100 billion in share buybacks for the second quarter and increasing its dividend. Cook explained this approach by stating that the company has 'always taken a prudent and deliberate stance on capital expenditures.'

Apple is not avoiding AI investment altogether. The A19 chip includes a built-in neural engine, Apple Intelligence is now embedded across its entire operating system suite, and the new Siri has been rebuilt using Gemini. The distinction lies in its strategy: on-device inference combined with access to external models, eschewing the construction of large-scale in-house training clusters.

From 2024 to 2025, Wall Street repeatedly criticized Apple for insufficient investment, with the prevailing view at the time being that building proprietary computing infrastructure equated to a competitive moat. By summer 2026, however, credit markets had reversed that judgment—massive capex shifted from being seen as a competitive advantage to a debt burden, and a restrained balance sheet transformed from appearing conservative to strategically flexible. Jay Woods, Chief Strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, remarked: 'Apple was previously criticized for underinvesting in AI, but in hindsight, it successfully avoided the capital expenditure trap.'

This reversal was price-confirmed on July 28. The market is not only penalizing those with excessive leverage but also rewarding companies with sound balance sheets. These two outcomes represent opposite sides of the same strategic choice.

Eighth Circuit Breaker of the Year

The reassessment conducted by credit markets on Monday reached Korean retail investors’ accounts within just one day.

All they knew was that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix were falling—and that their leveraged accounts had received margin calls.

What credit markets are repricing is not a single stock, but an entire pricing framework that had taken 'perpetually cheap capital' as a default assumption.
