Tesla Officially Announces: Cybercab Launch Event to Be Held in Austin on September 3

Tesla is scheduled to unveil its driverless Cybercab, featuring no steering wheel or pedals, in Austin on September 3 local time. Previous reports indicated that the vehicle has completed road testing and employee trial rides, with plans to initially offer access to employees before opening it to the public. Currently, Tesla's Robotaxi fleet in Austin primarily consists of 186 modified Model Y vehicles. The Cybercab will be gradually integrated into the fleet, but mass production remains limited for this year, and commercial operating permits are yet to be clarified.

Tesla is accelerating the market launch of its dedicated autonomous vehicle, the Cybercab, a move that could reshape its Robotaxi operational model.

On August 22, Tesla announced on the X platform that it will hold a Cybercab unveiling event in Austin, Texas, on September 3 local time. Designed specifically for fully driverless operation, the vehicle features no steering wheel or brake pedals. As Tesla’s first model dedicated to Robotaxi services, it is expected to join the Austin fleet and gradually shift the current operational model, which is primarily based on the Model Y.

According to previous reports by The Information, Tesla plans to roll out the service in two phases: first offering Cybercab rides to employees on public roads, and then formally opening access to the general public a few days later.

Pre-launch preparations largely complete

Prior to the official launch, Tesla has completed multiple preparatory steps. Since June, the Cybercab has been undergoing testing on public roads in various U.S. locations, including Austin. In July, the company began allowing employees to test ride the vehicle on private roads within its Austin campus to collect feedback, a process similar to the one undertaken before last year’s Robotaxi launch.

Meanwhile, Tesla has recently been training emergency responders in Austin on how to handle and move the vehicles in emergency situations.

As the Cybercab lacks a steering wheel and brake pedals, human drivers cannot take control if the autonomous driving system encounters issues. Tesla states that it employs remote operators who can intervene in emergencies.

This raises regulatory questions. For reference, Amazon-owned Zoox only received approval from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in July this year to operate commercial passenger services using similarly equipped vehicles without steering wheels or pedals; prior to this, it was limited to free trial rides. It remains unclear whether Tesla has obtained similar approval and whether the Cybercab will commence paid operations directly.

How will it integrate with the Model Y fleet?

Currently, Tesla operates its Robotaxi service in Austin using modified Model Y vehicles, which include additions such as self-cleaning cameras and a secondary communication unit. According to data from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, Tesla has currently registered 186 Model Y vehicles in the region for Robotaxi services.

By comparison, the Cybercab requires no additional retrofitting, which theoretically reduces operational complexity. However, it remains unclear whether Tesla will gradually replace the Model Y with the Cybercab or operate both models in parallel.

Notably, Tesla began producing the Cybercab in Texas last month but subsequently stated that mass production scale would not be reached within 2026. During the July earnings call, Elon Musk explained that because the Cybercab utilizes an entirely new platform, Tesla must first accumulate dedicated driving data before significantly expanding its deployment.
